Helpful tips to moving on
Now, when the relationship first ends, you are probably devastated. Hopefully these tips help you. (they are not in any particular order)
1. Don't be afraid to cry, it's natural to mourn the loss of a relationship. Don't be afraid to cry, trust me in the long run it helps if you don't try to hold it in.
2. Get out of the house! I know you want to sit in the house and sulk, but don't! Get out, call a friend, go to a movie! Get busy even if you aren't in the mood. There's nothing better than hanging with a bestie! Exercise is amazing! Try that, just something simple to begin. Exercise is proven to change your mood.
3. Don't be afraid to talk about it. Call your friend up and let it all out. And if you need, go to therapy. Therapy is a wonderful thing that helps you grow emotionally.
4. DO NOT TALK TO YOUR EX. I can't stress this one enough. When you end a relationship you will need time and space away from the person. If they try contacting you, ignore them until you think you are able to talk with them on a platonic level. If you keep talking to your ex after the breakup, it will just be confusing for you both.
5. Watch out for that "rebound" relationship. You do not want to get in another relationship until you're over your ex. That doesn't mean you can't go to a party with a friend and flirt, but make sure you aren't trying to fill the space your ex left.
6. Take your time. Healing is a process, and you will recover.
7. Watch out for impulsivity! Don't go on a mad shopping spree or anything that you might regret.
8. Pamper yourself! You deserve it! You're single now, let people know just how beautiful you are- inside and out!
9. Research! Find books or stories of people who have gone through rough breakups and have come out stronger in the end. Remember you're not alone, everyone at one point gets broken up with.
10. When you think you are ready, think about the relationship and why it ended. There had to be a reason, if not more than one. Realize that the person breaking up with you isn't a rejection of YOU it's just that there may be key issues that make you and the other not a good match, romantically speaking.
11. Write your feelings down! Writing is a very cathartic process. You can journal, vent, even write a letter that you won't send just to get it out on paper.
12. Make a list of reasons why you and you're ex weren't good for each other. It reminds you that it wasn't all your fault, it's just not the right fit.
13. Remove triggers! If there's something that reminds you of a good time, sure keep it. But to the things that are not good, get them out of sight and out of mind! Find a drawer or box and put all of it in there and tuck it away for another day when you think you can handle it.
14. Do something exciting and fun that can boost your ego!
15. Find a cute animal! It's proven that interaction with animals helps you heal emotionally. Ever hear about therapy dogs? They are therapy dogs for a reason! Animals provide comfort and change your mood.
16. Find a friend and plan a trip together! Maybe go to a concert, or go for a road trip!
17. Don't blame the ex or you. Take responsibility. It wasn't just him or her, it was both of you that didn't fit together.
18. Read the book "Over You" by Emma Mclaughlin and Nicola Kraus. Very helpful!
19. After a breakup take time away, but when you two are ready to come back together as friends make sure to have terms and boundaries
